Aveyron: endless discoveries

The Lot valley: medieval villages to discover

To the south of the territory, only about twenty minutes by car, flows the Rivière du Batch which formed a deep valley. Surrounded by woods, it has seen the birth and development of medieval villages, Saint-Côme-d'Olt, Saint-Eulalie-d'Olt, Estaing, now considered among the Most Beautiful Villages in France. The Lot valley is also an essential step in way of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in the same way as crossing the Aubrac plateau.

Going up on the Causse, Bozouls will charm you with its white stone houses and amaze you with its vertiginous canyon. The Dourdou, which meanders below the village, has hollowed out the limestone over the centuries, thus giving rise to the bozouls hole, a must in the sector.

Conches (Aveyron)

Conques: an essential stopover for pilgrims and tourists

Visit Aveyron without going through Conques, it is to miss one of the most beautiful stages of the department. Just over an hour away, this place steeped in history and spirituality, exudes a special atmosphere. Come and discover the abbey of Conques, with its ear-drum majestic and its stained glass windows with changing light, designed by Pierre Soulages. The treasure of Sainte-Foi will also know how to charm you and make you enter the history of this pilgrimage site, which welcomes thousands of pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela every year.

Rodez: an undisputed cultural center

About an hour's drive away, the town of Rodez unfolds on its rocky peak. Adorned with pink stones on the top of the hill, Cathedral stands out in the sky. It is a city rich in built heritage, with mansions majestic. Lively with its many shops and restaurants, Rodez is above all a cultural city, with many museums, the best known of which is the Soulages museum, international in scope.

Lozère, a little secret corner

Some of the landscapes of the department are known beyond the borders of the region, such as the Tarn gorges with its limpid blue waters or the great forests of the Cévennes become a National Park. Other more confidential, but equally wild landscapes will delight you and are a few kilometers from our territory.

Wild Aubrac

Le Aubrac plateau is shared between Aveyron, Cantal and Lozère. One of the wildest parts is in Lozère, where theimmensity of pastures has no equal. the Mailhebiau signal, which culminates at 1 meters above sea level, is the highest point of the plateau. In addition to the beauty of the landscapes, we share the same customs with this part of the department, such as the transhumance herds in the spring and common gastronomic specialties such as the essential Aligot. Crossing the Lozère on the way to Santiago de Compostela and arriving in Aveyron via the Aubrac plateau is one of the most beautiful parts of the route starting from Puy-en-Velay.

Lozère borders on the eastern part of our territory. Sparsely populated, it is a perfect department for lovers of nature and wide open spaces.

La Margeride, an air of Canada

La Margeride is a granite plateau north of Lozère. It is a territory dotted with forests, moors and lakes. Its landscapes are reminiscent of those of Canada, wild, secret, from which emerges a relaxing atmosphere. To get away from it all, go in a horse-drawn carriage to admire magnificent european bison. Many hikes will allow you to discover this little corner of paradise. The Margeride is also the territory which saw the birth of the bête du Gevaudan and which gave rise to the creation of a Zoo where you can admire magnificent wolves.

Cantal, the great mountain spaces

To the north of the territory, you can visit Cantal. It shares with us part of the Aubrac plateau and Truyère gorges, but the department is best known for its mountain range formed byancient volcanoes.

Unmissable sites not far from Aubrac

We'll never stop saying it, but theAubrac is a must and it cannot be dissociated from the three departments on which it is located. Saint Urcize is a small village on the plateau in the heart of the pastures, which is really worth a look. Going north, stop at Chaudes-aigues for a moment of relaxation in the city's thermal baths. Going up again, you will arrive at the Truyère gorges and the Mallet circus, where you can admire the majestic Garabit viaduct, imagined by Gustave Eiffel himself.
